Description:
"We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" is an instructional program based on the principles of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The program pairs student-tutors from JCU with 5th, 8th, and high school classrooms in the East Cleveland and Cleveland school districts. JCU tutors visit schools on a weekly basis to lead students in activities and exercises that reinforce learning about the Constitution and its role in our society.

What we do there:
Service participants in this activity lead students in grades 5-11 in activities based on the U.S. Constitution. Participants meet weekly to prepare lesson plans, and then visit the schools once a week to lead students in exercises that reinforce learning about the Constitution and its role in our society. The project culminates in a Mock Congressional Hearing held at John Carroll University at the end of the school year.

DESCRIPTION: We the People tutors help educate 4th and 5th grade students on the U.S. Constitution, citizenship, and civic engagement. Participants meet weekly to prepare lesson plans and then co-facilitate them with a small team of fellow tutors in their assigned classroom. The project culminates in a Mock Congressional Hearing held at John Carroll University at the end of the school year.
 
All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Participate in the We the People Practicum (AR 144-444) for 0 or 1-credit on Wednesday evenings from 8-9 pm.
  2. Meet with team to prepare weekly lessons and submit lessons each Sunday prior to weekly service.

ACTUAL SERVICE TIME: 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM

IMPORTANT: This activity will not be opened for self-registration; students must be registered by the Center for Service and Social Action after being approved by the activity's coordinators. Contact wethepeople@jcu.edu for more information.

DESCRIPTION: We the People tutors help educate 4th and 5th grade students on the U.S. Constitution, citizenship, and civic engagement. Participants meet weekly to prepare lesson plans and then co-facilitate them with a small team of fellow tutors in their assigned classroom. The project culminates in a Mock Congressional Hearing held at John Carroll University at the end of the school year.
 
All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Participate in the We the People Practicum (AR 144-444) for 0 or 1-credit on Wednesday evenings from 8-9 pm.
  2. Meet with team to prepare weekly lessons and submit lessons each Sunday prior to weekly service.

Further details about these requirements will be provided upon registration. Failure to complete these requirements will result in removal from the activity.

WE THE PEOPLE @ HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL - 8TH GRADE (FRIDAY)

ACTUAL SERVICE TIME: 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM

IMPORTANT: This activity will not be opened for self-registration; students must be registered by the Center for Service and Social Action after being approved by the activity's coordinators. Contact wethepeople@jcu.edu for more information.

DESCRIPTION: The We the People Service-Learning Program includes Youth for Justice, a program for middle school students. JCU tutors will help 8th grade classes research and present solutions to topics of injustice. Participants will meet weekly to prepare and then co-facilitate lessons with a team of fellow tutors in their assigned classroom.  The project culminates in a Youth for Justice Summit in the Spring of 2015 on John Carroll's campus. 
 
All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Participate in the Youth for Justice Practicum (AR 145-445) for 0 or 1-credit on Wednesday evenings from 7-8 pm.
  2. Meet with team to prepare weekly lessons and submit lessons each Sunday prior to weekly service.
