YOUTHABILITY (SUNDAY)

SERVICE TYPE: Inclusion and Accessibility
PARTNER: YouthAbility

DESCRIPTION: Participants in this service activity partner with developmentally-challenged and at-risk teens and young adults at the Jewish Family Services office. Together, they participate in a fitness class which includes stretching, cardio, strength, and balance.  YouthAbility promotes health and wellness as a part of their empowerment mission.  They teach their participants that if they want to help others, they must help themselves by being healthy.

All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:

  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of September 15th (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Participate in weekly service at the site.

Full details on these requirements will be provided upon registration. Failure to comply with them will result in removal from the activity.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF CLEVELAND (SUNDAY PM)

SERVICE TYPE: Administrative, Health & Wellness
PARTNER: Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland

DESCRIPTION: Service participants provide energetic, customer service while staff the Front Desk at the House Duties include: answering phones and guests' questions, taking reservations, greeting guests, and giving House tours. They also pitch in wherever they can: cleaning up a spill in the kitchen, tidying the common areas of the House, or sorting donations — whatever it takes to keep the House running smoothly.

NOTE: There is NO direct service involved with this activity; this is an administrative role. Unless given special permission to participate by your instructor, students with service-learning course requirements should not register for this activity.

All students who register for this service activity will be required to:

  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of September 15th (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Complete an authorization form agreeing to allow RMHC to obtain a background check or driving record and upload to participant profile by Friday, September 19th.
  3. Have a non-relative fill out a reference form and mail or fax it to Ronald McDonald House by Friday, September 19th.
  4. Participate in volunteer training at the site.
  5. Participate in weekly service at this site.

Failure to complete these requirements will result in removal from the activity.

RAINBOW HOSPITAL FRIENDLY VISITS (SUNDAY)

SERVICE TYPE: Health Care
PARTNER: Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital

NOTE: This is a unique activity and is NOT approved for service learning. Two mandatory trainings will take place at the end of October, and service will start in November. Those registering for this activity are asked to commit to service through April 2015.

DESCRIPTION: Participants in this activity help to provide a safe, clean, non-threatening play space for pediatric patients on a general medical division. Responsibilities include interacting with children, newborn to 18 years of age, in age-appropriate activities either in the Activity center or at a patient's bedside; feeding and rocking babies; supervising in the Activity Center; cleaning toys; and other duties.

All students who register for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of September 15th (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Complete a 1-step TB test at JCU's Health Services office by Friday, September 19th.
  3. Complete an application and upload to participant profile by Friday, September 19th.
  4. Have two non-relatives complete a reference form and return it to you, and upload to your participant profile by Friday, September 19th.
  5. Attend two training and orientation sessions at Rainbow Hospital on Thursday, October 23rd from 3:00-8:30 (including travel time) and Tuesday, October 28th from 3:15-6:00pm (including travel time).  Transportation is provided.
  6. Rent a Rainbow vest and ID badge to wear during service.
Failure to comply with these requirements will result in removal from the activity.
