THIS IS A SELF-PLACEMENT ACTIVITY. Days and times are negotiable. We will put you directly in contact with the organization and you will work out your particular schedule with them. This service opportunity is approximately 5 miles from campus; most students are able to drive to this site in about 20 minutes (view a map here).

DESCRIPTION: Service participants provide energetic, customer service while staff the Front Desk at the House Duties include: answering phones and guests' questions, taking reservations, greeting guests, and giving House tours. They also pitch in wherever they can: cleaning up a spill in the kitchen, tidying the common areas of the House, or sorting donations — whatever it takes to keep the House running smoothly.

SCHEDULE: Volunteers are needed especially during the following times: Fridays from 6-9 pm, and Sundays from 3-6 pm.

NOTE: There is NO direct service involved with this activity; this is an administrative role. Unless given special permission to participate by your instructor, students with service-learning course requirements should not register for this activity.

DESCRIPTION: Service participants will help patients to navigate the healthcare system at the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Health Center, located in East Cleveland. The health canter is focused on the treatment of diabetes, hypertension, kidney failure, mental health, specialized care for women and children, primary care, preventive care, health education and specialty care.

SCHEDULE: Days and times are flexible to fit your schedule, anytime between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, but a weekly commitment is requested. CSSA will contact you to determine your availability and help communicate that with STJHC.

NOTE: Students will need to make an intentional effort to interact with adaptive participants, not just with other JCU volunteers. The success of the program depends upon participants of all abilities interacting together.

THIS IS A SELF-PLACEMENT ACTIVITY.

This service opportunity is approximately 5 miles from campus; most students are able to drive to this site in about 20 minutes (view a map here).

DESCRIPTION: Service Participants at South Pointe Hospital assist in a variety of ways and serve as liaisons between primarily older patients and the South Pointe staff. Responsibilities involve engaging in direct interaction with and providing comfort to elderly patients through baking and distributing cookies, distributing magazines and recreational activities, escorting patients to/from church, performing Guided Imagery Therapy, assisting with dinner trays, and giving hand massages to the patients and their families.

SCHEDULE: In the recent past, students have served at South Pointe Hospital on Friday mornings and Monday afternoons. There may be other needs that South Pointe has as well.

MONTEFIORE PURIM CARNIVAL (SUNDAY, MARCH 20)

This service opportunity approximately 4 miles from JCU's campus; most students are able to drive to this site within 15 minutes (view a map here). 

Service participants in this activity will help residents enjoy an on-site carnival for the Jewish Holiday of Purim. This includes transporting residents from their rooms to the carnival (pushing their wheelchairs or escorting them), helping the residents play games, and serving them food (hamantachen cookies and punch). When the carnival is over, students will transport the residents back to their units.

Purim is a fun holiday, so service participants are encouraged to dress up in costumes - keeping in mind that they should be appropriate to an older audience and non-offensive to any groups of people. Costumes are not required.

RAINBOW BABIES AND CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL (SUNDAYS)

SERVICE TYPE: Health & Wellness

ACTUAL SERVICE TIME: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

NOTE: This is a unique activity and is NOT approved for service-learning unless specifically approved by a professor. Additionally, a year-long commitment to the activity is required, so participants who started in fall 2015 will continue in spring 2016. No new students will be able to serve this semester. Due to the special nature of these placements, these activities will not be available for open registration. If you are interested in participating next year (fall 2016-spring 2017), please email service@jcu.edu to be placed on a waiting list.

DESCRIPTION: Participants in this activity help to provide a safe, clean, non-threatening play space for pediatric patients on a general medical division. Responsibilities include interacting with children, newborn to 18 years of age, in age-appropriate activities either in the Activity center or at a patient's bedside; feeding and rocking babies; supervising in the Activity Center; cleaning toys; and other duties.

All students who register for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of September 14 (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Complete a 1-step TB test at JCU's Student Health Center (at no charge) by Friday, September 18.
  3. Attend two orientation sessions at Rainbow Hospital on Monday, September 21 from 6:00-9:00 pm (including travel time), and Sunday, September 27 from 5:30-8:30 pm (including travel time). Transportation is provided.
  4. Complete an application and references on the first day of service at the site.
  5. Rent a Rainbow vest and ID badge to wear during service.
Further details about these requirements will be provided upon acceptance/registration. Failure to complete these requirements will result in removal from the activity.

NOBLE ROAD LIBRARY REFUGEE ASSISTANCE (SATURDAYS)

DESCRIPTION: JCU students will help with the Noble Library Welcome Hub, assisting the staff with programming for refugees. The programming differs from week to week, but the content is all geared toward helping the refugees to gain skills for living in Cleveland. Past activities have included helping refugees learn English, and teaching them about healthcare and hygiene.

JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER TUTORING - HOUSE 5 (SUNDAYS)

IMPORTANT: This service activity is open to FEMALE students ONLY!

DESCRIPTION: Service participants work with female JDC residents to tutor in literacy and math. Sometimes this includes playing literacy-related games like Scrabble and Bananagrams with JDC residents.

All students who register for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of February 1st (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Have three non-relatives complete a reference form (it will be emailed to you upon registration) and return it to the CSSA office by Friday, February 5.
  3. Complete the following paperwork on the first day of service at the site: an application, waiver, confidentiality statement, release of liability, authorization for release of confidential information, and review of volunteer guidelines.
  4. Agree to complete a background check at the site.

Further details about these requirements will be provided upon acceptance/registration. Failure to complete these requirements will result in removal from the activity.

This service activity will be open but restricted to students in service-learning sections of TRS-101 courses on January 21 & 22 (until this message is removed). This activity will be open for campus-wide registration on Monday, January 25, at 9:00 AM.

DESCRIPTION: Participants in this service activity partner with developmentally-challenged and at-risk teens and young adults at the Jewish Family Services office. Together, they participate in a fitness class which includes stretching, cardio, strength, and balance. YouthAbility promotes health and wellness as a part of their empowerment mission. They teach their participants that if they want to help others, they must help themselves by being healthy.

All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:

  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of February 1st (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
