YOUTHABILITY EXERCISE CLASS (SUNDAYS)

NOTE:
This service activity will be open but restricted to students in TRS 101-51,53,56,59,61,62,63,65 on September 3rd and 4th. Any students who register for this activity but are not registered in the above listed service-learning courses will be removed. This activity will be open for campus-wide registration on September 8th at 9:15 AM.

DESCRIPTION: Participants in this service activity partner with developmentally-challenged and at-risk teens and young adults at the Jewish Family Services office. Together, they participate in a fitness class which includes stretching, cardio, strength, and balance. YouthAbility promotes health and wellness as a part of their empowerment mission. They teach their participants that if they want to help others, they must help themselves by being healthy.

All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:

  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of September 14 (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Attend a mandatory training on Sunday, September 27, from 9:45 AM to 10:00 AM. The group will leave campus at 9:25 AM (15 minutes earlier than other weeks) to arrive at 9:45 AM for a 15-minute training. All subsequent weeks, the group will leave at 9:40 AM. Please do not register for this activity unless you can commit to this training time.

Full details on these requirements will be provided upon registration. Failure to comply with them will result in removal from the activity.

JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER TUTORING - HOUSE 5 (SUNDAYS)

SERVICE TYPE: Youth Programming, Detention and Re-Entry
PARTNER: Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center, Jewish Federation of Cleveland
ACTUAL SERVICE TIME: 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

IMPORTANT: This service activity is open to FEMALE students only!

NOTE: This service activity is restricted to students in EN 299 and will not be available for open registration.

DESCRIPTION: Service participants work with female JDC residents to tutor in literacy and math. Sometimes this includes playing literacy-related games like Scrabble and Bananagrams with JDC residents.

All students who register for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of September 14 (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Have three non-relatives complete a reference form (it will be emailed to you upon registration) and return it to the CSSA office by Friday, September 18.
  3. Complete the following paperwork on the first day of service at the site: an application, waiver, confidentiality statement, release of liability, authorization for release of confidential information, and review of volunteer guidelines.
  4. Complete a background check through JCU Police Department (free of charge to you) by Friday, September 18.

Further details about these requirements will be provided upon acceptance/registration. Failure to complete these requirements will result in removal from the activity.

NORTHEAST REINTEGRATION CENTER GED TUTORING (SUNDAYS)

SERVICE TYPE: Detention & Re-entry
PARTNER: Northeast Reintegration Center
ACTUAL SERVICE TIME: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
 
NOTE: This service activity will be open but restricted to students in EN 299 until this message is removed. Any students who registers for this activity but are not registered in the above listed service-learning courses will be removed.

DESCRIPTION: Service participants in this activity will assist with GED tutoring for female inmates of the Northeast Reintegration Center’s Faith Cottage, who are preparing for their GED exam. All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:
  1. Attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of September 14 (for those new to service) or attend one of several speakers throughout the semester (for those returning to service).
  2. Complete an application, standards of conduct form, and complete a background check (at no charge to you) on the first day of service at the site.
  3. Bring and present driver's license or State ID each week to enter the site.

Further details about these requirements will be provided upon acceptance/registration. Failure to complete these requirements will result in removal from the activity.
