MUSIC FOR ASYLUMS

"Music for Asylums" is a radio program hosted by Jeff Johansen on WUJC that has run weekly since fall 1988. Its current time slot is Friday mornings, 7:30-10 a.m. The show primarily features recent releases of ambient, gothic, techno, electronic, tribal techno, tribal ambient, gothic ambient, and synthesizer new age music, with occasional play of industrial, experimental, avant garde, noise, and Native American music. Essentially, I try to play what is not being played elsewhere in Cleveland. I tend not to play acoustic new age music, particularly solo piano or guitar. I also do not play music I consider too commercial. I welcome promo CD's for consideration for play on my show. Send CD's for radio play to: Jeff Johansen, Host, Music for Asylums, WUJC, John Carroll University, University Heights, OH 44118. I can be reached at 216-397-4487.

I used to write music reviews of new releases of ambient and electronic music for the trade journal, New Age Voice. Time constraints led to abandoning this effort, although I have hopes of getting back to reviewing music in the future. Some of the old reviews that have appeared in New Age Voice are available for review below.

New Age Voice: Music Reviews

It has been awhile since I have added to this website, so I am adding this to indicate that as of February 2003, I am still here doing the show!  The show has not changed in format.  Current labels receiving strong support on my show include Hypnos, Projekt, Waveform, Six Degrees, Putamayo, Northside, and East Side Digital.   Some labels from which I have not heard for awhile, but which are still visited favorites are Cuneiform, Tone Casualties, Release, Extreme, and Groove.  I like to develop a relationship with good labels and push their stuff. I prefer to play new music, so artists and labels - send me your promotional materials!
