Faculty Service Committee Meeting

September 24, 2004

Present: K. Gygli, D. Horwath, C. Spitznagel, J. Yost, M. Finucane

Absent: B. Bockanic, L. Cima

Karen Gygli called the meeting to order at 3:05 pm. The minutes from September 7 were distributed and amended.

The committee counted the ballots from the election for the Boler School of Business Dean’s Search Committee and the BSB seat on the University Core Committee. Ben Forbes, Management, and Paul Murphy, Marketing, were elected as the Boler School of Business representatives for the search committee. Lauren Bowen, Political Science was elected as the representative from Arts and Sciences. John Yost, Psychology, was elected as the at-large representative. LeRoy Brooks, Economics and Finance, was elected to the University Core Committee as the Boler School of Business representative. One hundred forty-one faculty cast ballots for this election.

We discussed posting nominee lists to the web and Carl Spitznagel offered to maintain the list on a daily basis. Any committee member receiving a nomination for the search committee for the director of the Grasselli Library should submit the names to Karen Gygli and to Carl Spitznagel. After discussion, we decided that the two seats open to all faculty should be at-large positions.

The next issue focused on the ad hoc committee formed by the Faculty Forum Executive Committee to study electronic voting. Horwath reported that a faculty member approached Ernie DeZolt, Forum President, last spring about electronic voting. After consulting with the executive committee of the Forum, an ad hoc committee was formed. Horwath reported that during their first meeting the committee discussed strengths and weaknesses of the different systems of voting. The Borda system came up and one member strongly supported it, one urged the committee to slow down, and three were unfamiliar with the system. Horwath created a memo explaining the system that he shared with the FSC members. Paul Schick is a strong proponent of the Borda method and argues it accurately reflects what the voters truly want. Yost expressed concern that with the ranking method, people could block someone from winning by structuring their rankings.

Horwath argued that the Faculty Service Committee should be the ones studying voting methods, not an ad hoc committee of the Forum. Gygli suggested we set up a meeting with the ad hoc committee to invite them to share their findings.

Gygli questioned whether we have the software capability for electronic voting and Horwath answered that is something else to study down the road. He questioned who would maintain the voting list.

We discussed possibilities for bringing the issue before the faculty. Gygli wants to keep the conversation open but also keep the FSC involved. Spitznagel suggested a memo to Ernie DeZolt expressing interest in the results of the ad hoc committee’s study with a reminder that voting methods are the purview of the FSC and that we need a voice before anything is presented to the faculty. Gygli will contact Ernie DeZolt.

Gygli reported that she would send an email to the faculty reporting the election results from the BSB dean’s search committee and the BSB core committee representative. She will also encourage faculty to run for the library director’s search committee.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 18 at 4:30 pm.

The meeting adjourned at 4:20 pm.
