Dr. Baumgartner joined the faculty in 1969 to teach General and Physical Chemistry, as well as Biochemistry. His research interests are in Vision Chemistry, Photosynthesis/Photo respiration and Enzyme Kinetics. Dr. Baumgartner spent the Summers of 1979 and 1980 working at SOHIO (now BP-Amoco) Research Laboratories studying renewable energy sources. He received a Grauel Faculty Fellowship from John Carroll University for the 1985-86 academic year and spent that time doing research in the Biochemistry and Pharmacology Departments at Case Western Reserve University. He is an active member of the Cleveland Section of the American Chemical Society, having served as its Chairman (1977) and currently serving as Director since 1982. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair. Dr. Baumgartner served as Chairman of the Chemistry Department from 1989 to 1994. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1990. He served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1994-2004.
